The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean 972 km off the coast of Ecuador. It consists of 13 large islands with an area greater than 10 square kilometers, 6 medium islands with an area of 1 sq km to 10 sq km and other 215 islands of small size, in addition to rocky headlands of few square meters, distributed around the line of Ecuador land.
The islands were formed 5 million years ago as a result of tectonic activity on the seabed. The current volcanic activity is still expanding the archipelago.
